I recently popped a bottle of this wine, I was surprised to find an
easy to enjoy, utterly delicious wine. The Roll Ranch syrahs seem
to alternate from structured to soft, depending on the growing
conditions of the vintage, and in the barrel this one had some
tannins. But they seem to have mellowed and now only lightly grace
the back of the palate, complimenting the wine's fat fruitiness.
Showing much like the 1998 and the 2000, this one tastes great now,
yet seems to have everything needed to age well."

dark ruby/purple-hued 2003 Syrah Roll Ranch is even better than the
2004. Its up-lifted, floral bouquet (which reveals notes of
blackberries and flowers) is followed by a wine with fleshy,
succulent, full-bodied opulence, sweet tannin, and low acidity.
This sexy beauty should drink well for 7-8 years. ( 92 Points )
Adam Tolmach kindly conducted a mini-vertical, going back to 1995,
of his Bien Nacido Vineyard Syrah, and it was good to see how well
they all performed. My favorites included the 1996 (93 points),
1998 (91 points), 2000 (93 points), and 2002 (93 points). The only
wine that did not show as well as I would have hoped was the 1997
(88 points), which was much lighter and on a faster evolutionary

Ventura County (readers should also keep an eye out for the new
vineyard being planted there by Sine Qua Non’s Manfred Krankl),
Ojai’s 2003 Syrah Roll Ranch is a Pomerol-styled Syrah offering
lush, succulent fruit, low acidity, and an alluring, sexy demeanor
and charm. It exhibits copious amounts of black currant and cherry
fruit along with hints of licorice and loamy soil notes.
Full-bodied and opulent, with low acidity and immediate
appeal. ( 91 Points
I was not able to taste through the full line-up of Ojai’s 2004
Syrahs, but I did see barrel samples of the Bien Nacido, Thompson
Vineyard, White Hawk Vineyard, and Roll Ranch. They all appear to
be sensational Syrahs with distinctive extroverted aromatic
profiles and concentrated palates. It should be another highly
successful vintage for Adam Tolmach, who has not missed a beat
since he began making Syrah at the Ojai Vineyard in 1983.”

2003 Syrah Roll Ranch, from one of Ventura County’s few vineyards
(Manfred Krankl has just completed planting a steep hillside
vineyard in this area), is an opulent, full throttle,
seductive-styled offering with a dense blue/purple color as well as
a gorgeous nose of blackberry liqueur, licorice, flowers, and
background wood. Ripe, voluptuously-textured, and fleshy, it is a
beautiful example of Syrah for both neophytes and connoisseurs.”
( 91-93 Points )
One cannot say enough about the commitment to excellence exhibited
year after year by Adam Tolmach.
